This collection was featured in my first abstract exhibition in Tapas Cafe on Sukhumvit Soi 11, Bangkok. The opening reception was on Tuesday 29th September 2009.
About “Soul”:
Every beautiful image is created from a variety of factors, other than it’s subject. It is about the composition of the image, the colours used, the textures and the emotion the image evokes. It is about the background as much as the foreground; the negative as much as the positive.
I have spent many years painting and found it exceptionally difficult to express myself through my art. I focused almost too much on a subject and it’s details, that I forgot the importance of the other various factors of my image. For a while it seemed near impossible for me to let go and stop trying to recreate what I was looking at.
Eventually, I realised I was being distracted by my subject matter, so I decided to get rid of it all together. I wanted to paint nothing…or rather everything else: the composition, the negative and positive space, the colour, the texture, the emotion. So that is what I did – with my abstracts – and as a result I have given my art it’s freedom. I broke down the walls of my personal constraints that were keeping it confined. It has forced me to explore new ways to manipulate oil paint, new tools, new mediums, new methods and I mix colours that I had never before thought to mix.
In exploring this new found freedom, I have also improved my technical skills as a painter, which was unexpected.
